Six student-athletes honored by NJCAA for academic success

The NJCAA has recognized six Marshalltown Community College student-athletes for their academic success in the 2013-14 season. Two student-athletes received the Superior Academic Achievement award while four student-athletes received the Exemplary Academic Achievement award.

Sophomore Whitney Baker (Nevada, IA/Nevada), a Liberal Arts major and member of the MCC softball team, posted the highest grade point average of any student-athlete with a 3.97 mark. John Bloom (Laurel, IA/East Marshall), a sophomore pitcher on the MCC baseball team posted a 3.92 GPA as a member of the Machine Tool Technology program.

The NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement is awarded to student-athletes that record a cumulative GPA between 3.80 and 3.99 on a 4.00 scale throughout the year.

Sophomore Alex Galvan (San Antonio, TX/Ronald Reagan) of the MCC soccer team recorded a 3.78 GPA as a Business Administration major. Sophomore Emmeline Huffaker (Baxter, IA/Baxter), a liberal arts major on the MCC softball team posted a 3.74 GPA. Ty Russell (Victoria, BC/Lambrick Park), a sophomore first baseman on the MCC baseball team registered a 3.71 GPA in the Athletic Training program and dual-sport athlete Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) recorded a 3.70 GPA as a member of the MCC volleyball and women’s basketball programs.

The NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement is presented to student-athletes that record a cumulative GPA between 3.60 and 3.79 on a 4.00 scale throughout the year.

The six student-athletes are a record for most NJCAA academic awards received in one year for Marshalltown Community College.
