Tiger baseball set for 2014 home opener

The Marshalltown Community College baseball team will open its 2014 home schedule with a doubleheader against Des Moines Area Community College on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers (13-18) will open up play against the Bears (20-9) at Shawn Williams Field at 2:00 PM.

After being forced to play its first 31 games on the road all throughout the United States due to winter weather, the Tigers will finally take action on their home field. The field recently saw upgrades with the addition of windscreens and a new entrance way along with new fencing down the right field line.

MCC is currently riding a five-game winning streak thanks to four Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) wins over Muscatine Community College over the weekend. The Tiger offense has been led by sophomore shortstop Daryl Blaskovich (Brentwood Bay, BC/Lambrick Park) with a .359 batting average. Sophomore outfield Bennett Mann (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) leads the Tigers with eight home runs on the year, second in the conference.

Richard England (Centerville, IA/Centerville) has carried the Tigers on the mound this year as the sophomore has posted a 3-1 record with a team-best 3.13 earned run average and 34 strikeouts.

MCC looks to snap a five-game losing streak to the Bears, including a 12-1 loss on April 1.
