Tigers give away two at Kirkwood

Cedar Rapids, IA—Two days after completing a conference sweep, the Marshalltown Community College baseball team fell flat in a doubleheader on Tuesday, dropping two nonconference games to Kirkwood Community College, 10-0 and 16-7. Colin Schroeder (Grimes, IA/Dallas Center-Grimes) recorded two doubles and three RBI in the game two loss for the Tigers.

Despite six hits in game one, the Tigers left seven runners on base as the Eagles scored a run in each of the first four innings. Kirkwood broke the game open with four runs in the fifth to end the game in five innings. Jorge Michael (Caracas, Venezuela/Claret) was tagged with the loss, his first of the season.

The Eagles took advantage of a series of hit by pitches and walks to open game two as Kirkwood totaled five runs in each of the first two innings. The Tigers clawed their way back into contention, scoring six runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a three-run double from Schroeder.

Kirkwood pulled away for good with three more runs in the bottom of the third. Schroeder rounded out the scoring for MCC with his second double in the fifth and later scored on a Logan Holtz (Urbana, IA/Center Point-Urbana) single.

The Tigers struggled on all ends of the diamond as the offense stranded 10 runners while the pitching staff combined for 12 walks and the defense committed three errors to doom the Tigers on the road.

The Tigers travel to Southwestern Community College for a single nine-inning, nonconference game at 3:00 PM on Thursday.
