Late push leads to a split at Indian Hills

Centerville, IA—The Marshalltown Community College baseball team rebounded to take a 10-4 win over Indian Hills Community College on Saturday afternoon on the opening day of Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play after dropping a narrow 2-1 game against the Warriors at Pat Daugherty Field. Engel Rosario (Santo Domingo, DR/Dencapec) drove in four runs on the day.

Freshman Austin Gridley (Fairfield, IA/Fairfield) tossed a gem in game one, allowing one earned run through the bottom of the fourth inning. After falling in a deficit, Rosario delivered his team-leading sixth home run of the year to tie game at one in the fifth. Gridley maintained the lead over the next two innings but an unearned run in the Warriors' final at bat led to a run to give Indian Hills a 2-1 victory.

The Tigers outhit Indian Hills 6-4 in game one but were unable to take the opening game.

After a minor rain delay pushed backed the start of game two, MCC exploded for six runs in the first inning of the nightcap. Four straight hits, followed by a three-run home run from Rosario in the first inning of game two gave MCC a 6-0 lead through the first inning of play.

RBI-singles from Bennett Lopez (Dorado, PR/PRBA) and Colin Schroeder (Grimes, IA/Dallas Center-Grimes) extended the lead to 8-0 in the second. MCC starting pitcher Kolton Gonnerman (Centerville, IA/Centerville) limited the Warriors through three innings. Freshman Casey Dorhout (Sanborn,IA/Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn) pushed the lead to 10-1 with a two-run double in the fourth.

Jorge Michael (Caracas, Venezuela) and Thomas Sanchez (Onalaska, W/Holmen) limited the Warriors to give MCC its first victory over Indian Hills this season.

The two teams resume play tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at 12:00 PM on Sunday.
