Squandered lead sends Tigers to a pair of losses

Centerville, IA—Looking to salvage a split with Indian Hills Community College on Sunday afternoon, the Marshalltown Community College baseball team dropped an extra inning affair to the Falcons in the weekend conference series finale. After dropping game one 7-2, MCC fell 9-8 in the nightcap.

Aside from a pair of home runs in game one, the Tigers struggled offensively. Luis Duran (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Centro de Estudio Espaillat) connected on his second home run of the weekend in the fifth inning and Kaleb Hanks (Sioux City, IA/Sioux City East) delivered his first long-ball of the year in the sixth, but that was all the offense the Tigers could muster.

Having dropped the first three games of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) weekend series, MCC had its sights set on a victory in the final game. The Tigers took advantage of six walks and a hit by pitch in the second inning to stake a 4-2 lead over the Falcons.

An RBI-single from Hanks in the third scored Max McCay (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) to extend the lead. A two-run sixth inning from the Falcons was answered by three runs from the Tigers in the top of the seventh. McCay delivered a two-run single for an 8-4 lead.

In full control in the final frame, MCC squandered the four-run edge as Indian Hills used four hits in the seventh to tie the game. After a scoreless eighth from the Tigers, Indian Hills loaded the bases and scored the game-winner on a walk to sweep the weekend.

The Tigers head to Kirkwood Community College for a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
