Tigers Split Conference Opener

The Marshalltown Community College baseball team got back to action on Friday afternoon, taking on the Spartans of Southwestern Community College. The Tigers had a nine-day break from live competition after their doubleheader with Kirkwood Community College on Wednesday, March 21. The Tigers split with the Spartans Friday afternoon, taking a close game one 5-3 before a blowout 21-8 loss in game two.

The Tigers had to play catchup early on, giving up three runs in the first inning. Walter Hernandez was on the mound for the Tigers in game one, giving up three runs off a Stephan Soto home run. Hernandez did not give up any more runs the rest of the day in his seven innings of pitching. Down three, the Tiger bats stepped up in the third inning when Jose Mieses, Marving Serrano, Luke Woodward, and Elijah Bergeron all made their way around the bases to put the Tigers up 4-3. With Hernandez taking care of business on the mound the Tiger added a run in the fourth inning and walked off the field with a 5-3 victory.

The Tigers went down again early on in game two, but would not be able to overcome the Spartan bats. The Tigers used six different pitchers in game two, but none were able to slow down the Spartan offense, giving up a pair runs in the first two innings, six runs in the third inning and eight in the fifth inning. Sophomore Jose Mieses finished the game going 3-4 from the plate and freshman Trevon Hughes finished going 2-3 from the plate.

The Tigers were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday but due to weather, the games have been moved to Monday starting at 1:00 PM.
