The MCC baseball season has come to an end after the team finished third in the Region XI Tournament on May 12th. While the season did not finish as they had hoped, this year's Tiger squad was full of individual talent, as six Tigers were selected for All-Region honors.
"I was pleased with our kids receiving All-Region recognition," stated Head Coach Kim Johnson. "Jose was the only non Iowa Western or Indian Hills player to be named to the first team which shows how tough our region is. Our second team selections of Eli Bergeron and Marving Serrano were very deserving as were our Honorable Mention guys, in Walter, Luke and Jeffry who all had terrific freshman seasons."
#3 Jose Mieses: 1st Team All-Region
Jose earned 1st Team All-Region as a freshman after recording a.351 batting average, stealing 16 bases and recording 61 hits in 51 games. This season he continued that trend with a .350 batting average, stealing 23 bases, and recording 48 hits in 43 games. While he has been a consistent presence at the plate, Jose's play at shortstop separated him from the field. In his sophomore season he recorded 52 put outs and 103 assists which lead the team. While his time at MCC has concluded, Jose plans to continue his baseball career and education at Central Methodist University.
#22 Marving Serrano: 2nd Team All-Region
Sophomore Marving Serrano impressed coaches all season long at center field to earn him a second team nod. The sophomore center fielder recorded 78 put outs and three assists. On the season, Serrano recorded a .953 fielding percentage. Serrano also made noise at the plate this season, recording 34 hits in his 110 at bats. His .309 batting average ranked fourth on the team and fourteenth in the conference, he also recorded a .418 slugging percentage ranked fifth on the team.
#20 Elijah Bergeron: 2nd Team All-Region
The freshman from Center Point, Iowa led the Tigers at the plate this season, recording a .361 batting average and a .494 slugging percentage. Bergeron also led the team in doubles with eleven and was third on the team in stolen bases with seven. Bergeron's best game of the season came on April, 25 as he played a critical role in the Tigers 8-7 victory over the Spartans of Southwestern, going 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs.
#36 Walter Hernandez: Honorable Mention All-Region
Hernandez was the Tigers ace all season, going 5-4 on the mound in 52 innings pitched. The freshman right-hander used a combination of speed and movement to record 42 strikeouts on the season. Walters best performance came back on March, 30 when the Tigers hosted the Spartans of Southwestern. In the matchup, he threw a complete game, striking out eight batters and recording a season low, 3.86 ERA.
#23 Jeffry Roldan: Honorable Mention All-Region
Freshman Jeffry Roldan was a pleasant surprise to Head Coach Kim Johnson this season, recording a .324 batting average while batting in ten runs. Roldan was consistent all year long, but exploded in the Region XI Tournament, going 6-11 at the plate with two doubles, two RBIs, two stolen bases, and made it across the plate himself five times.
#1 Luke Woodward: Honorable Mention All-Region
Freshman Luke Woodward spent most his time in the lineup as the Designated Hitter for the Tigers, but also played in left field. Woodward recorded 22 hits with his 76 at bats, batting in 21 runs and stealing 10 bases. A powerful hitter, Woodward hit six doubles and two home runs as a freshman. Woodward was a major contributor in the Tigers upset victory over the Falcons of Indian Hills in the First round of the Region XI Tournament, going 2-5 at the plate with three RBIs.
