Merdic Green named national player of the week

A day after earning Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week honors, sophomore Merdic Green (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) has been named the NJCAA Division I National Player of the Week.

Despite falling in the Region XI Tournament semifinal round, Green provided his best week as a member of the Tigers in his two years at MCC. The sophomore averaged 27.0 points per game on 65.4 percent shooting and 95.0 percent from the free throw line while grabbing 11.5 rebounds per game.

The Tigers entered the week as the No. 5 seed in the tournament and travelled to No. 4 Southeastern Community College. In a 75-72 upset over the Blackhawks, Green went off for a double-double, scoring 23 points and pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds. Green also blocked two shots and grabbed two steals in the win.

Green upped his effort in attempts to prolong his MCC career at top-seeded Indian Hills Community College on Thursday night. The sophomore shot 10-13 from the floor and 11-12 from the free throw line to finish with a career-best 31 points. The Tigers fell to the Warriors 96-91 to close out the regular season.

Green finished his stint at MCC with 691 career points while shooting 47.3 from the floor and 80.4 percent from the free throw line. Green started 62 of a possible 63 games during his tenure at MCC.

Green joins fellow sophomore Mike Rodriguez (Boston, MA/Redemption Christian Academy) in earning national recognition this year after Rordriguez was selected as the national player of the week on Dec. 17.
