The Marshalltown Community College Men's Basketball team spent this past Friday volunteering at the Marshalltown House of Compassion, a yearly tradition for the Tigers.

Members of the MCC team spent time cooking dinner for those in need throughout the Marshalltown area. The Tigers, many who came to MCC from other states and countries, had the opportunity to meet people within the community for the first time.

Freshman Denzel Ubiaro (London, England/City of London Academy) enjoyed the experience. "It felt really good to be honest, giving back to the community. It was quite a humbling experience. Being new to Marshalltown, I felt fortunate to be able to give back to my new home. It was a learning experience for us all."

The men's basketball team also spent time at the annual Oktemberfest celebration in Marshalltown at the end of September. The Tigers spend every year at the fall festival, helping out on the opening day with the children's activities. This year's group of players volunteered at the Kids Fun Run and the Little Miss and Mr. Oktemberfest ceremony.

Freshman Jamil Maddred (Camden, NJ/Camden) spent Oktemberfest participating in an array of activities with the local children. "It was a really fun experience to get out and see the town for the first time and meet a lot of people that will support the team throughout the season. The kids seemed really happy to see us. They asked a lot of questions about the team and our schedule, where we were all from. It was just a great time altogether."

MCC opens up the 2015-16 season at home as the Tigers host the Emerson Classic Oct. 30-31.
