Three-point shooting lifts MCC past Quakerdale

Marshalltown, IA—Four players reached double-figures for the Marshalltown Community College Men's Basketball team in Wednesday night's 89-78 victory over Quakerdale Prep Academy at the Student Activity Center as the Tigers improved to 13-7 on the year.

Nick Cross (Beverly, MA/Beverly) scored all 18 points in the second half to lead the Tigers. Souf Mensah (Nantes, France/CCI) scored 17 for his fourth-consecutive double-digit performance while Amir Maddred (Camden, NJ/Camden) added 16 and Vincent Lasley (Tama, IA/South Tama) added 14 to go along with a team-high 13 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

The Tigers drained eight of their 10 three-point shots in the second frame, including four from Cross. MCC shot 48.4 percent from the floor on the night. The Tigers have now hit at least 10 three-point shots in four games this season.

MCC built an early edge over the Eagles as Mensah scored seven points in the opening minutes. Guilherme Verardo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Esporte Clube Pinheiros) connected on a three to give the Tigers a 30-15 lead with 7:11 to play in the first. Quakerdale chipped away in the closing minutes, but MCC held on to a 41-34 lead at halftime.

Mensah and Verardo each hit a three to open the second half for MCC, but led by just seven until Cross found his touch from the floor. The freshman scored 13 straight points for the Tigers to give the home team a 63-47 lead at the 10:17 mark. The Eagles never pulled within single digits as MCC snapped a two-game losing streak.

Sophomore Tyler Miller (Louisville, KY/22ft Academy) dished out a game-high nine assists as the Tigers assisted on 18 of the team's 31 field goals in the win.

MCC closed out the nonconference portion of its schedule Wednesday night and will enjoy a week off before opening Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play at Indian Hills Community College at 7:00 PM on Jan. 20.
