Tigers ride Lasley's double-double to conference win

Marshalltown, IA—Contributing his second double-double in the last three games, Vincent Lasley (Tama, IA/South Tama) led the Marshalltown Community College Men's Basketball team to a 71-58 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victory at home over Northeast Community College on Saturday night. Lasley posted team-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

The Tigers (14-8/1-1) never trailed against the Hawks (12-6/1-1) on Saturday to notch their first conference win of the year, snapping a nine-game ICCAC losing streak.

Lasley took over in the second half for the Tigers, scoring 11 points and pulling down seven rebounds in the final 20 minutes. The sophomore leads the ICCAC in rebounding with 7.6 boards per game.

Joining Lasley in double-figures were Amir Maddred (Camden, NJ/Camden) with 16, Guilherme Verardo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Esporte Clube Pinheiros) with 12, and Jamil Maddred (Camden, NJ/Camden) with 10. Both Amir and Jamil Maddred tallied eight rebounds in the win.

Lasley opened the night with the first points on a layup in the opening possession. Northeast tied the game at 13 at the 12:24 mark of the first half and again at 20 with under eight to play. Verardo drained his second three-point shot of the half to give the Tigers an eight point edge at 31-22, and knocked down another triple to extend the lead to double-digits. MCC went into the locker room leading 35-26.

The second half opened similar to the first as Lasley scored the first points for MCC on a three-point shot on its opening possession. The Hawks pulled within three points with 9:09 to play, but the Tigers connected on 11 of their next 12 free throws, including six from Jamil Maddred to pull away.

The Tigers dominated the glass in Saturday's win with 52-30 rebounding margin as seven players grabbed at least four rebounds.

Next up for the Tigers is a conference matchup at home against Iowa Western Community College, ranked No. 8 in this week's NJCAA Division I poll, at 7:00 PM on Jan. 27 as part of a doubleheader with the MCC Women's Basketball team.
