Tigers Defeat Tritons 91-84

The Marshalltown Community College (MCC) men's basketball team traveled to Fort Dodge, Iowa Wednesday night to take on the Tritons of Iowa Central Community College. The Tigers defeated the Tritons 86-72 back in November in the Student Activity Center. The Tigers have been playing good basketball, going 4-1 in their last five games. The good play would continue Wednesday night, as the Tigers defeated the Tritons 91-84.

The Tigers were led in scoring by standout sophomore Mohamed Thiam. Thiam went 10-15 from the field and 6-7 from the free throw line for 28 points on the night. Thiam dominated around the rim grabbing 15 rebounds and 1 block. Freshman Oscar Kao added 15 points for the Tigers, going 6-16 from the field while recording 4 assists. Kelton Edwards came off the bench to add 10 points. Edwards has been a productive sixth man for the Tigers all year long, recording his ninth double-digit point total of the season.

Iowa Central's Tray Croft took control of the Triton offense early on, going 11-22 from the field, 4-7 from the arc, and 9-12 from the free throw line for 35 points. Kemryn Jenkins came off the bench for the Tritons, going 7-11 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line for 17 points. The Tritons did not challenge balls at the rim all game long, losing the rebound effort 44-28.

The Tigers will be back in action Saturday, February 10 when the #2 Warriors of Indian Hills come to the Student Activity Center. The men's basketball game will tip off at 7:00 following the women's basketball game against Black Hawk College. The double header will be used as a fundraiser for Pablo Martinez, the son of MCC Head Soccer Coach Rafael Martinez. In September, Pablo was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblast Leukemia and has been receiving treatment at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. There will be a $10 entry fee as well as a 50/50 drawing with proceeds going to the Martinez family. We ask attendees to wear orange in support of Leukemia awareness with the option of buying orange shirts at the gate.
