Coach Brynjar Brynjarsson began his coaching tenure at Marshalltown Community College in 2005. Coach Brynjarsson came to MCC as an assistant under Coach Denny Aye. Now, as head coach, he brings five years of NCAA Division I experience, including back-to-back Big 12 titles at Iowa State University, where his assistant coaching career began under Coach Larry Eustachy. He also coached at the University of Idaho prior to coming to MCC.

 In the last eight seasons, the men’s basketball program has had 32 players move on to a four-year school, including 18 players to NCAA Division I level.

The 2017-18 season finished with an overall record of 19-11 while finishing 3-5 in the ICCAC. Sophomore Mohamed Thiam earned 1st Team All-Region honors while freshman Oscar Kao picked up a 2nd Team All-Region nod. Thiam finished the season an NJCAA 3rd Team All-American and signed to New Mexico State. 

The 2016-17 Tigers finished with a 17-12 record with three players selected to the All Region Team. Brando Simmons, Jamir Coleman, and freshman Mohamed Thiam all received the honor of being selected to an All Region team. The Tigers were hot at the beginning of the season recording nine wins in the first 11 games.

The 2015-16 season would be another winning season for Brynjarsson as his team finished 18-14 behind the play of four All Region selections Vinvent Lashley, Amir Maddrad, Tyler Miller, and Guilherme Verardo. The team would advance to the Regional Semifinal before being knocked off by the #6 ranked Warriors of Indian Hills.

Brynjarsson’s winning formula continued in the 2014-15 season, recording a 19-13 record. The Tigers where able to secure two All Region selections in Mike Rodrigues and Meric Green. The Tigers would make it to the Regional Semifinal after defeating Southeaster in the first round 75-72. The Tigers would eventually fall to #13 Indian Hills in a highly competitive 96-91 game.

The Tigers produced their second consecutive winning season under Brynjarsson in 2013-14. After earning the fourth seed in the Region XI Tournament, Brynjarsson guided the Tigers to a first-round victory at home, a 93-81 victory over Northeast Community College, MCC's third win of the season over the Hawks. Two players, sophomore Troidell Carter and freshman Mike Rodriguez earned Second-Team All-Region XI honors after ranking in the top-ten in points per game. Freshmen Merdic Green and Marquis Cunningham earned Academic All-Region honors as well.

The 2012-13 team saw a major turnaround as the Tigers posted an overall record of 22-9 and finished third in the ICCAC. Brynjarsson led the program to 10 consecutive wins to start the year and finished the regular season winning seven of its final eight games. Chris Caird was named to the first-team all-region while Matej Delinac was a second-team pick. Freshman Troidell Carter earned honorable mention honors from the ICCAC.

A native of Iceland, Coach Brynjarsson came to the United States in 1991 and graduated from Iowa City West High School. He then attended Iowa Lakes Community College, where he was a two-year starter on their basketball team. He then transferred to Luther College, where he played basketball and earned a degree in business management. He later earned his masters degree in sports studies from the United States Sports Academy

He resides in Marshalltown with his wife, Kim and their five kids: Pierce, Desirae, Nick, Beyonce, and Brooklynn.
