Tigers Score Win At Nationals

Albany, GA - The MCC men's soccer team knew that they would have to put up at least a two point deficit against 5th seeded Jefferson College (14-6-1) to keep their semifinal dreams alive. Off a header by freshman Marcus Boehler (Yokosuka, Japan) 84 minutes into play the Tigers did just that.

MCC used two assists by sophomore Bruno Liozzi (Sao Paolo, Brazil) to pull off the 2-0 upset over the NJCAA Division I, 9th ranked Vikings.

Neither team could break their opponent's defense in the first half, keeping the match scoreless for the first 45 minutes. It wasn't until the 61st minute of the second half that sophomore Joao de Olivera (Sao Paolo, Brazil) sent a bicycle kick into the net off the first of Liozzi's two assists to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead.

The Tigers kept the defensive intensity through the second half, keeping the Vikings scoreless. "We played with much more intensity and won more of the 50/50 balls tonight," said head coach Rafael Martinez. "We wanted to prove that we are part of the best 12 teams here at this tournament. I think we proved it to everyone and ourselves."

Looking ahead, the Tigers will need Jefferson College to score a two point regulation win over Tyler Junior College (18-2-1) tonight. A Jefferson victory would setup a three way tie in pool play with each team being 1-1. If Tyler scores at least one goal against the Vikings, the Tigers would hold a better goals scored against percentage, which would send them into the semifinals on Friday.

"The goal for tonight was just to worry about ourselves and not everyone else," said Martinez. "We did that tonight."
