No. 15 Tigers shut out Luther to open 2013 season

Marshalltown, IA-- The Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team opened up the 2013 season in convincing fashion, scoring a 2-0 victory over visiting Luther College on Thursday afternoon. Jose Gomez (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) and Austin See (Nevada, IA/Nevada) provided the scoring for the Tigers.

MCC, ranked No. 15 in the preseason NJCAA poll, controlled the game early on as the Tigers' defense held the Norse to zero shots in the first half. Gomez provided an immediate spark off the bench for MCC, scoring at the 41:38 mark of the first half after being inserted just two minutes prior. Gomez received a low-crossing pass in the box from freshman John Krause (Slater, IA/Ballard) to put the Tigers up 1-0.

The Tigers maintained their one goal lead throughout the second half until See delivered an insurance goal in the 89th minute. Following a Luther foul deep in the MCC offensive zone, Juan Carillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) sent a direct kick into the box, finding the foot of See who buried the shot on a one-timer for his first collegiate goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Julian Pena (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine) picked up his first collegiate win in net. Pena was not forced to make a save on the day thanks to a solid defensive effort from the Tigers back line, limiting Luther to just one shot on the day.

In all, MCC outshot its opponent 10-1 in the match, putting six on net while receiving three corner kicks to two for Luther.

With the win, the Tigers have now won four consecutive season-openers.

Next up for MCC will be a home game against Grand View JV at 6:00 PM on August 25.
