Tigers score road victory against Iowa State Club

Ames, IA—Sophomore Hernan Lopez (Muskego, WI/Muskego) scored the game-winning goal, his first as a member of the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team, in the 71st minute to give the Tigers a 2-1 victory on the road against the Iowa State club team. With the win, MCC improves to 4-1-1 on the year.

After both teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first half, Lopez provided the game-winner on an assist from Roberto Velazquez (San Antonio, TX/Ronald Reagan) to give MCC its second consecutive one-goal victory. Velazquez leads the Tigers with three assists on the year.

Freshman Julian Pena (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine) stopped a career-high five shots on the day to pick up his fourth win of the season. MCC fired 11 shots, seven coming on net.

ISU opened up the game with a goal in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead, only the second first half goal the Tigers have allowed all year.

Freshman Juan Carillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) tied the game at one with his team-leading fourth goal in the 34th minute. Defender Jaime Agujetas (Vigo, Spain/Celta) was credited with the assist on the play, his second of the year.

The Tigers now head into Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play, traveling to Iowa Western on Sept. 11. MCC last squared off with the Reivers in last year's Region XI Championship game with the Tigers scoring a 1-0 victory to advance to the NJCAA Tournament. The two teams will kick off at 4:00 PM.
