Tigers' offense proves to be too much for visiting Scott

Marshalltown, IA—An early goal from visiting Scott Community College put an early scare into the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team, but the Tigers battled back to take a 2-1 victory in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play. Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) converted a penalty kick in the 78th minute for the game-winner.

The Tigers gave up a costly turnover in their own box just over a minute into the game and Scott's Ryan Drechsler was able to collect the loose ball and score easily to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage. MCC looked to its top two scorers to help out the Tiger offense as John Krause (Slater, IA/Ballard) scored in the 32nd minute to even the game and Carrillo's penalty kick gave the Tigers their first conference victory of the year.

The Tigers offense had no problem creating opportunities throughout the game, but it was finding the back of the net that was the challenge. MCC fired a season-high 45 shots on net against the Eagles, with 19 coming on net. The Tigers took 20 shots in the first half and came out firing in the second, taking 25 strikes.

MCC also tallied a season-high 15 corner kicks. The Tigers defense clamped down after the early mishap as Scott failed to register a shot in the second half and finished the game with just four attempts.

Krause's goal, his fourth of the year, came from a long pass from the middle of the field from sophomore Alex Galvan (San Antonio, TX/Ronald Reagan). After Krause corralled the pass, the freshman beat the lone defender in the backfield and struck a shot to the far post, bouncing off the pipe and into the back of the net to even the game at one.

Even with MCC's constant offensive attack, the game remained tied until MCC was awarded a penalty kick at the 77:09 mark following a handball from a Scott defender. Carrillo was called upon for the free shot. The freshman fooled Scott goalkeeper Mitch Schneider into going left and lofted his shot to the right side of the net for his fifth goal of the year.

With the win, the Tigers have won the last eight matches against the Eagles by a combined score of 29-6.

MCC is now into the heart of its conference schedule. The Tigers will host Iowa Lakes Community College at 4:00 PM on Sept. 17 before hitting the road for a pair of ICCAC contests.
