Velazquez scores twice as MCC drops Iowa Lakes 4-2

Marshalltown, IA—Fighting off multiple injuries, the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team had no trouble earning its second Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victory of the year as the Tigers dropped visiting Iowa Lakes 4-2 on a wet and frigid Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers up their overall record to 6-2-1 on the year while improving to 2-1-0 in conference play.

MCC struck twice in each half to propel itself to the win. Bill Baye (Crystal, MN/Park Center) wasted little time getting the Tigers on the board as the sophomore defender snuck into the box on a corner kick and headed home his first career goal in the 13th minute.

Following a pre-game injury to Julian Pena (Muscatine, IA/Muscatine), the team's primary goalkeeper, freshman Andrew Waterfall (Brandon, SD/Brandon Valley) was called upon for his first career start in net. Waterfall stopped two shots in earning his first victory as a Tiger.

Once again MCC dominated in the shots category, posting 30 against the Lakers with nine coming on net. In the last two games, MCC has combined for 75 total shots and 28 on goal. The Tigers ranked third nationally in total shots with 165 and 12th in the country in shots per game with 18.3.

The Tigers pressured Iowa Lakes from the start of the game and managed to find the back of the net on Baye's header, coming on a corner kick from Juan Carillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega). 25 minutes later the Tigers doubled their lead with a goal from Roberto Velazquez (San Antonio, TX/Ronald Reagan), his second of the season. Alex Galvan (San Antonio, TX/Ronald Reagan) found John Krause (Slater, IA/Ballard) inside the box, who then provided a low-crossing strike to the foot of Velazquez to finish off the attack.

The Lakers struck first in the second half, cutting MCC's lead in half with a goal in the 53rd minute. The Tigers responded less than five minutes later as Carillo scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year on an assist from Jaime Agujetas (Vigo, Spain/Celta). Carillo has now scored a goal in three of his last four games.

After scoring just four goals in their last three games, the Tigers buried their fourth goal of the game against Iowa Lakes just minutes later as Velazquez tallied his second goal of the game, coming on a cross from Krause.

The Tigers hit the road on Saturday, traveling to North Iowa Area Community College for a 1:00 PM conference matchup with the Trojans.
