MCC rolls to fourth straight win with 3-0 shutout

Marshalltown, IA—The Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team closed out its regular season home schedule with a 3-0 victory over Indian Hills Community College on Saturday afternoon. Playing for the first time in front of the team's new scoreboard, the Tigers scored two late first half goals before adding on a third to take the victory.

The Tigers (13-3-1, 8-2-0) picked up their second win of the season over the Warriors thanks to first half goals from Hernan Lopez (Muskegon, WI/Muskegon) and Chester Killen (Brooklyn Park, MN/Park Center). Bill Baye (Crystal MN/Park Center) tacked on a second half goal to give the Tigers the 3-0 win.

Andrew Waterfall (Brandon, SD/Brandon Valley) picked up his second win of the year and recorded his first career shutout. The freshman came up with four saves in net for MCC.

After a 10-0 rout of the Warriors on Sept. 25, the Tigers entered Saturday with a more possessive attitude on their minds. Featuring a revamped starting lineup, the Tigers had chances early on but continued to control the flow of the game. MCC finally lit up the scoreboard for the first time on a penalty kick from Lopez at the 37:39 mark of the first half.

Killen registered his first goal of his MCC career just six minutes later as the freshman received a cross from Roberto Velazquez (San Antonio, TX/Ronald Reagan). Killen controlled the pass in front of the net and buried the shot to the upper right corner to double the Tigers' lead.

The first half featured an array of fresh faces on the field for the Tigers. The second half opened with the team's primary starters seeing their first minutes of action of the day, including scoring leader Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) who wasted little time helping the Tigers build on their lead. Just over two minutes into the half, Carrillo sent a cross to Baye who found the back of the net for his third goal of the year.

Baye helped contribute on the backline as well, leading the team to their seventh shutout of the year. Carrillo has now recorded 13 points in the team's last four games.

The Tigers currently sit in second place in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) behind No. 1 nationally ranked and undefeated Iowa Western. MCC has one game remaining before the playoffs begin, a road game at third-place Iowa Central on Oct. 26. The Tritons improved to 7-3 in conference play with an 8-1 win over Scott CC on Saturday. MCC defeated Iowa Central 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 1.
