Tigers shine in Premier Development League

A pair of Marshalltown Community College soccer players, one former and one current, have excelled in the Premier Development League through the early stages of their respective seasons. Javier Lopez, a 2012 First-Team All-American selection at MCC is currently playing for the Des Moines Menace while current Tiger and 2013 Second-Team All-American selection Juan Carrillo is playing for the GPS Portland Phoenix.

Carrillo has come on as of late for the Phoenix, scoring two goals in a two game stretch last week, including a goal on a direct kick on June 15. Carrillo, who led the Tigers in scoring as a freshman in 2013, leads Portland in minutes played. The Phoenix are currently 2-6-0 in the Northeast Division.

Lopez, who transferred to NCAA Division II Lynn University after a standout career at MCC, has helped guide the Menace to the top of the Heartland divisional standings with a 5-1-0 record. A 2012 member of the Menace, Lopez, a defender, returned for the 2014 campaign and scored his first goal of the season in a 3-2 win over the Thunder Bay Chill on June 14.

Lopez and Carrillo became the fifth and sixth soccer players, respectively to earn All-American honors while at MCC.

The PDL is the professional development league of the United Soccer Leagues throughout the United States and Canada and is currently the top-level men's amateur soccer league, consisting of 64 teams across 10 divisions.
