Offense sputters against Iowa Lakes

Marshalltown, IA—The Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team's offense stalled against Iowa Lakes Community College Wednesday afternoon in a 2-0 conference loss to the Lakers. The Tigers dropped their second consecutive Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) match to fall to 10-6-0 overall and 6-4-0 in league play.

The Lakers (7-4-1, 5-4-1) netted a goal in each half and held the MCC offense scoreless over 90 minutes. The Tigers have scored just four goals in the team's last four games.

Kwan Tolbert (Conway, AR/Conway) stopped three shots on the day in the loss.

Iowa Lakes struck first with a penalty kick goal in the 29th minute after an MCC handball in the box. Lee Marshall buried the Lakers' first goal to the left side of Tolbert, who dove to his right. The Tigers' offense pressured the opposition in the first 45 minutes and went into halftime with a 9-3 advantage in shots, but failed to find the back of the net.

The Tigers were handed an opportunity in the 58th minute as MCC was awarded its own penalty kick. Sophomore Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) stepped up to the spot but was denied by Iowa Lakes keeper Alan Guadarrama to maintain the lead for the visitors.

Guadarrama made saves on chances from Carlos Smith (Des Moines, IA/East) in the 75th minute and Omar Ramos (Des Moines, IA/East) in the 88th minute to preserve the shutout.

The Lakers' final goal of the match came on a loose-ball scramble in the box in the 80th minute.

The meeting was the ninth overall between the two teams and it is the first win for Iowa Lakes in the series.

The Tigers play in their final home game of the season on Saturday against Scott Community College at 2:00 PM.
