Tigers advance to Region XI semi-finals with 3-0 win

Marshalltown, IA—Three different Tigers scored and sophomore Juan Carrillo (Cordoba, Spain/CES Lope de Vega) tallied two assists to propel the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team to the semi-final round of the Region XI Tournament with a 3-0 victory over No. 7 seed Scott Community College on Wednesday. The Tigers will take on No. 3 seed Iowa Lakes Community College on Saturday.

After a year hiatus from the Region XI Tournament Final Four, the Tigers return to Cownie Sports Complex in Des Moines, IA to face the Lakers who defeated No. 6 seed Indian Hills Community College 1-0 on Wednesday. MCC and Iowa Lakes will kick off at 2:00 PM.

The Tigers used a goal in the first half from freshman Martin Chavarria (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) to take a 1-0 lead midway through the opening frame. Celes Vilar (Las Palmas, Spain/San Antonio Maria Claret) and Carlos Smith (Des Moines, IA/East) tacked on goals in the second as the Tigers advanced to the semi-final round for the second time in three years.

Kwan Tolbert (Conway, AR/Conway) was tested just four times on the afternoon, twice in each half, to record four saves. The Tigers outshot Iowa Lakes 29-7 for their second win over the Lakers in 11 days.

In other Region XI Tournament action, top-seeded Iowa Western Community College escaped No. 8 seed Dakota County Technical College 1-0. Fourth-seeded Iowa Central Community College defeated North Iowa Area Community College 2-0 to set the stage for the tournament's final four.

After an early advantage in possession, the Tigers broke through as Chavarria buried a rebound from Carrillo to take the 1-0 lead 28 minutes into the first half.

Vilar was on the receiving end of a corner kick from Carrillo in the 51st minute for his seventh goal of the year to put MCC up 2-0. Smith capped off the scoring in the 71st minute with his fourth career goal on a direct kick shot from roughly 30 yards out.

The two assists extends Carrillo's school record with 28 career assists. The sophomore also moved into a tie for first place on the single season assists record with 15, tying former All-American Victor Matos (2004). His 84 career points moves him into sole possession of third place on the all-time list.
