Tiger defense earns ICCAC recognition

This week's Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Defensive Player of the Week award goes to the No. 10 Marshalltown Community College men's soccer backline defense, consisting of Florian Caraballo (Cordoba, Spain/I.E.S. Medina Azahara), Agustin Ortiz (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown), Miguel Jareno (Ubeda, Spain/I.E.S. Lopez-Neyra), and Fernando Gutierrez (Ibiza, Spain/I.E.S. Algarb)

The foursome have anchored the Tiger defense lately, including the past week that saw MCC post back-to-back shutouts. The Tigers defeated Iowa Central Community College 1-0 on Wednesday and helped MCC tie No. 9 Iowa Western Community College.

With the two shutouts, the backline extended the Tigers' shutout streak to five matches, a span of 508:20 dating back to August 30 against Carl Sandburg.

As a team, the Tigers rank second nationally in goals against average with a mark of 0.37.

MCC has now been awarded the last three defensive player of the week honors, including the previous two weeks that saw freshman goalkeeper Rafael Pereira (Lisbon, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Vergilio Ferreira) earn the recognition.

The Tigers, who received its highest national ranking since 2007 on Tuesday, resume play at home against third-place ICCAC opponent Iowa Lakes Community College (5-1-0/4-1-0) at 4:00 PM on Wednesday.
