Pereira lands second national player of the week honor

Sophomore Rafael Pereira (Lisbon, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Vergilio Ferreira) of the No. 3 Marshalltown Community College Men's Soccer team has landed his second straight NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer Player of the Week award.

Pereira, who was also named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Goalkeeper of the Week for the second straight week, earned the national recognition after guiding the Tigers to a pair of wins last week. MCC dropped Iowa Central Community College 2-1 on Wednesday before upsetting then-No. 3 Iowa Western Community College 2-0 at home on Saturday.

Pereira, a NJCAA Division I First-Team All-American as a freshman, stopped six shots against Iowa Central and shut down Iowa Western behind a season-high seven saves on Saturday. In four career games against the nationally ranked Reivers, Pereira has blanked the team three times.

Pereira is tied for fourth in the nation with four shutouts on the year while his 0.71 goals against average ranks 15th. The sophomore has also won eight games on the year, the second most in the NJCAA.

Next up for Pereira and the Tigers is a trip to Mason City, IA for a match against North Iowa Area Community College at 2:00 PM on Saturday afternoon.
