No. 3 MCC falters at home against Iowa Lakes

Marshalltown, IA—The No. 3 Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team suffered just its second setback of the 2016 season on Tuesday, falling at home to Iowa Lakes Community College 4-0. The Tigers fall to 9-2-1 overall and 8-2-1 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play.

On a blustery day in Marshalltown, the Tigers struggled to get their offense going. The Lakers struck first with a rebound goal off of a corner kick in the 29th minute. While the offense was stifled in the first half, the defense managed to maintain the one-goal deficit through the first 45 minutes of play.

Neither side was able to capitalize in the offensive end in the second half until the Lakers stunned MCC with its second goal of the game in the 72nd minute, once again coming off of a corner kick. The Lakers, who received votes in this week's NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer poll continued to push and added two more goals over the next 11 minutes to shock the nationally ranked Tigers.

Tuesday's loss was the first home loss for the Tigers in its last 18 games. The team's last home loss came on Oct. 15, 2014, also to Iowa Lakes, a 2-0 defeat. MCC had not allowed four goals in a match since Oct. 5, 2011, a 5-1 loss to Iowa Western Community College.

Sophomore Rafael Pereira (Lisbon, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Vergilio Ferreira) stopped three shots on net for the Tigers.

MCC will take on Indian Hills Community College at 2:00 PM Saturday afternoon at home. The Warriors handed the Tigers their first loss of the season, a 2-1 defeat on Sept. 17 in Ottumwa.
