Four Tigers tabbed NSCAA All-East Region

2016 NSCAA All-East Region Team

Four members of the Marshalltown Community College men's soccer team have earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Junior College Division I All-East Region honors. The Tigers finished the season 15-4-1 and reached the Region XI Championship game.

Sophomores Rafael Pereira (Lisbon, Portugal/Escola Secundaria Vergilio Ferreira) and Fernando Gutierrez (Ibiza, Spain/I.E.S. Algarb) were named to the first-team while sophomore Pedro Oliveira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colegio Estadual) and freshman Kino Ryosuke (Hyogo, Japan/Takigawadaini) earned second-team honors.

Pereira, a NJCAA Division I Third-Team All-American was tabbed as the top goalkeeper in the East Region after winning 15 games with 10 shutouts in 2016. The sophomore posted a 0.71 goals against average and a .827 save percentage to close out his career as a Tiger. Pereira was also named to the All-Region XI First-Team for the second consecutive year and was a four-time Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Player of the Week.

Gutierrez, a 2015 NSCAA and NJCAA Second-Team All-American pick, appeared in all 20 games for the Tigers in 2016 and anchored one of the top defenses in the country. The sophomore scored one goal and added an assist from the backline and helped post a 0.69 goals against average, the eighth best mark in the nation. Over the past two seasons, Gutierrez and the Tiger defense allowed just 24 goals in 41 matches. Gutierrez also earned All-Region XI First-Team honors as a sophomore.

A dominant force in the defensive midfield, Oliveira controlled the middle of the field for the Tigers that led to the team's 11 shutouts on the season. As a sophomore, Oliveira scored four goals and added three assists for a total of 11 points. Oliveira was tabbed as an All-Region XI First-Team pick for the second consecutive.

Ryosuke proved to be one of the most prolific scorers in the nation in his debut season at MCC. The freshman scored 18 goals and added nine assists for a total of 45 points. All three marks ranked second in the ICCAC and inside the top 20 in the nation. Ryosuke's eight game-winning goals ranked third in the nation. The freshman was named to the All-Region XI All-Tournament team and was a two-time ICCAC Player of the Week in 2016.

NINE TIGERS LAND ON ALL-REGION XI TEAMS

13 members across four teams from Region XI earned NSCAA All-East Region honors.

The Tigers reached the Region XI Championship game for the second consecutive year and were ranked inside the top-10 nationally for a majority of the year. MCC finsihed the season ranked No. 12 in the NSCAA poll and No. 15 in the NJCAA poll.
