MCC mourns the loss of former Tiger Isaac Fonseca

The Marshalltown Community College department of athletics expresses its condolences to the friends and family of Isaac Fonseca Garcia, a former MCC soccer player who passed away last week.

Fonseca Garcia, 24, passed away on Wednesday Dec. 7 at the University Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, IA. The son of Modesto Fonseca and Olga Garcia, Isaac graduated from Marshalltown High School in 2010.

Fonseca Garcia was a member of the MCC soccer program in 2010 and appeared in 13 games while starting 12. He contributed two assists on the year.

MCC head coach Rafael Martinez expressed his condolences to the friends and family of Isaac on behalf of the MCC soccer program. "The MCC family is very sad to hear about the news of Isaac's passing. When you join the Tiger family you are part of it forever and we offer ourselves to help in any way we can. Isaac was always a positive individual that really enjoyed the opportunity he had here at MCC. He worked extremely hard to be successful."

Former Marshalltown High School and MCC men's soccer player David Gomez, who was a member of the Tigers from 2013-2015 and was a longtime friend and teammate of Fonseca Garcia's, remembered Isaac both on and off the field. "Isaac's senior year of high school soccer was always talked about amongst many of our friends," Gomez stated. "They were a penalty away from qualifying for the state tournament. I looked up to Isaac and his team. Hearing those stories motivated me and when I joined Bobcat soccer I wanted our team to be the next to make it to the sub-state final and hopefully win it.

"When Isaac joined the MCC Tigers, I got the chance to see him play with many skilled foreign players and I continued to look up to him. I also had the opportunity to play with Isaac for the local Party Boyz club team in Marshalltown and with his help and effort we went on to be a solid team.

"Outside of the soccer field is where Isaac was most admired," Gomez continued. "He always seemed to enjoy his lifestyle. He was a very laid back guy but he worked very hard. The memories of Isaac within our friends will never be forgotten."
