Tigers Sink Reivers at Home

Marshalltown, IA – Marshalltown Community College hosted the Reivers of Iowa Western Community College on Saturday, September 15. With the air temperature rising and a heavy dose of Iowa humidity, the Tigers and #17 Reivers took the field in a game that has been the premier matchup in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference over the years.

After a very competitive scoreless first half, the Tigers opened up the second half with a 50th minute goal from sophomore Rafael Vacas. Vacas has had a very productive week on the field, scoring three goals on Wednesday against the Blackhawks of Southeastern Community College. Sekou Kromah provided the assist in the opening goal and has been a great surprise for the coaching staff, the freshman forward has recorded 3 assists and has scored 3 goals so far this season. Just 3 minutes after Vacas scored the opening goal, freshman Kazuki Kimura put the Tigers over the top, this time assisted by Vacas.

Goalkeeper, Joel Serrano, provided the spark the team needed to maintain its momentum, after several productive runs by the Reivers, Serrano saved a penalty kick and then make an incredible play on the reshot to protect the shutout. Serrano had a busy day in the net, stopping multiple runs by the Reivers, the sophomore goalkeeper recorded 7 saves in the shutout victory. The Tigers continued to maintain possession and make several good runs, recording five shots in the second half.

Now 7-1, the Tigers will host the Trojans of North Iowa Area Community College on Tuesday, September 18. The Trojans are currently 3-3-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in ICCAC play, losing 3-0 to the Lakers of Iowa Lakes Community College and tying the Red Tails of Hawkeye Community College 1-1 last Saturday.
