Volleyball, softball named NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year

Two Marshalltown Community College athletic teams have been recognized by the NJCAA as Academic Teams of the Year. The women’s volleyball program and the softball team were honored for achieving a grade point average of at least 3.00.

Both teams were named an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year in 2012-13 as well. The softball team posted a GPA of 3.29 in 2013-14 while the volleyball team reached a mark of 3.02 throughout the academic year.

The volleyball team placed nine players on the Academic All-Region squad this year, including four on the first team while the softball team put 11 players on the Academic All-Region teams, also with four first-team honorees.

The NJCAA also recognized softball players Whitney Baker (Nevada, IA/Nevada) and Emmeline Huffaker (Baxter, IA/Baxter) with individual awards. Baker was awarded the Superior Academic Achievement award for posting a 3.97 GPA while Huffaker earned the Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement with a 3.74 GPA. Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) of the volleyball team received the Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement as well for posting a 3.70 GPA.

Each team reached new heights in athletic competition as well over the course of the year. The volleyball posted the team’s most wins and first winning season since 2005 with 22 while the softball team recorded a program record with 33 victories.
