Tigers open 2014 with a win at the Irish Dome Winter Classic

Rosemount, MN—Sarah Wilson (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) homered and pitched a complete game as the Marshalltown Community College softball team opened up the 2014 season with a 7-6 victory over North Platte Community College at the Irish Dome Winter Classic on Monday morning, giving head coach Ty Robinson his first career coaching win at MCC.

Trailing 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tigers rallied for a five-run fourth inning, capped by a two-run double from Lexie Biehl (Maquoketa, IA/Maquoketa). MCC gave up a run in the top of the fifth but Holli Baker and (Grimes, IA/Dallas Center-Grimes) Wilson opened up the bottom of the frame with back-to-back home runs to put the Tigers on top. Wilson got out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning to pick up her first win of the season.

Wilson and Baker both scored two runs against the Knights. Wilson scattered six hits while striking out nine batters in her season debut.

The Tigers are off until March 7 when the team travels to Dakota County Technical College for a doubleheader.
