Offense erupts as softball takes three wins at Minessota Classic

Rosemount, MN—The Marshalltown Community College softball team has proved it can score all season long, but the Tigers took their offensive attack to another level on Wednesday afternoon, picking up three wins by outscoring their opponents 57-3. With the three wins, MCC improves to 9-4 on the year and have won eight of their last nine games.

After rain shortened the Tigers' six-game schedule over the weekend in Bixby, OK, MCC was forced to find alternative games to bolster its schedule. The Tigers wound up in Rosemount, MN to take part in the 7th annual Minnesota Classic at the Irish Sports Dome.

The Tigers opened up the day with a 23-1 victory against Mesabi Range Community and Technical College, the most runs scored by an MCC softball team since April 4, 2009 when the Tigers defeated Brown Mackie College 26-3. MCC used a barrage of home runs, including two from Lexie Biehl (Maquoketa, IA/Maquoketa), one coming as a grand slam as the freshman finished the game with seven RBI.

McKenna Hotopp (State Center, IA/West Marshall) connected on her first home run of the year to help extend the Tigers' lead. Sarah Wilson (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) delivered on both ends of the box score for MCC, tossing the five inning complete game for her fourth win of the year while belting her fourth home run of the season.

Brianna James (Lynville, IA/Lynnville-Sully) anchored the Tigers in game two against Anoka-Ramsey Community College as the sophomore improved to 3-1 on the year with a 13-0 five inning shutout. Over her last three starts, James has gone 3-0 in the circle while allowing one earned run in 15 innings of work.

The final game of the morning saw the Tigers pummel Rainy River Community College 21-2. Wilson dominated both offensively and in the circle once again as the sophomore delivered two home runs while picking up her second win of the day.

Holli Baker (Dallas, IA/Dallas Center-Grimes) connected for a grand slam in the rout while Hotopp belted her second long ball of the day. Mackenzie Gott (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa) smashed her first home run of the year as well.

The MCC offense has now outscored its opponents 124-29 through 13 games this year and has allowed just six runs over its last nine contests.

The Tigers take on Region XI Division I opponent Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, IA tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
