Tigers pick up two conference wins at Southwestern

Creston, IA—The Marshalltown Community College softball team picked up its first two Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victories of the year with two wins over Southwestern Community College on Wednesday. The Tigers took game one 9-3 and finished off the sweep with an 11-6 triumph in the nightcap.

MCC (11-6, 2-0) was paced by an array of hitters against the Spartans, who appeared in the Also Receiving Votes category in this week's NJCAA Division II poll. Lexie Biehl (Maquoketa, IA/Maquoketa), this week's ICCAC Offensive Player of the Week, picked up four hits and drove in six runs on the day. In game two, Holli Baker (Grimes, IA/Dallas Center-Grimes) went 4-5 at the plate with five RBI and also picked up her second win of the year in the circle.

The Tigers have scored at least 10 runs in seven games this season. MCC boasts six players with a batting average of at least .400 and currently lead the ICCAC with a team average of .403. The Tigers also lead the conference in on base percentage, slugging percentage, and extra base hits.

MCC opened up game one with a 6-0 lead through the first three innings as McKenna Hotopp (State Center, IA/West Marshall) belted her third home run of the year. The Spartans scored two runs over the next three frames to cut into the deficit, but Hotopp smashed a two-run double in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Sarah Wilson (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) recorded her sixth win of the year after tossing six innings while striking out a career-high 13 batters.

The onslaught continued in game two as the Tigers built a 10-0 lead through the first three innings, including a six-run third. Baker drilled a two out, three-run home run to open things up. Wilson scored the team's final run in the sixth as MCC finished off the sweep.

Shaiann Treu (Waianae, HI/Nanakuli) went 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored while Brooke Dunkin (Bussey, IA/Twin Cedars) picked up two hits, including a triple to pace the Tiger offense.

After postponements have hindered the MCC schedule, the Tigers get back on track with eight games in four days, set to begin on Friday at Southwestern against North Iowa Area Community College. For complete information on the team's updated schedule, click here.
