Tigers rebound to earn split at Iowa Central

Fort Dodge, IA—The Marshalltown Community College softball team bounced back in game two of a doubleheader against Iowa Central Community College on Sunday to salvage a split with the Tritons. After dropping game one 10-2 in five innings, the MCC offense paved the way for a 14-6 victory in game two.

Sophomore hurler Sarah Wilson (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) kept Iowa Central off the scoreboard through the first two frames of game one, but the Tritons broke through with six runs in the bottom of the third inning to jump out to the lead.

The Tigers answered back with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning as Tacie Blunk (Boone, IA/Boone) and Kyndal Milder (Columbus Junction, IA/Columbus) delivered run-scoring doubles in the inning. The Tritons halted the MCC rally and scored four in the bottom of the fifth to take the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) win.

Mackenzie Gott (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa) finished the opener 3-3 at the plate with a run scored while Blunk went 2-2.

MCC opened up game two with a chance to take the early lead, but the Tigers stranded three runners in the first inning as neither side crossed the plate through the first two frames. The Tigers' offense finally cashed in with runners in scoring position with four runs in both the third and fourth innings to pull away. In the fourth inning, Gott drove a run-scoring double and Wilson followed up with a three-run home run, her team-leading seventh of the year.

The Tigers strung together a trio of singles in the sixth inning to help bring five more runners in to score to put MCC in a comfortable position to close out the game. Brianna James (Lynnville, IA/Lynnville-Sully) pitched the complete game to improve to 5-1 on the year.

Lexie Biehl (Maquoketa, IA/Maquoketa) finished game two 3-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, giving her a total of five hits on the afternoon. The freshman is nine for her last 13 with nine RBI during the stretch. Emmeline Huffaker (Baxter, IA/Baxter) showed patience at the plate and was walked three times and was rewarded with four runs scored to propel the Tiger offense.

The Tigers complete their four day stretch of eight games with a doubleheader at Des Moines Area Community College on Monday, set to begin at 3:00 PM.
