Wilson's gem baffles Southeast as MCC takes two

Marshalltown, IA—Sophomore pitcher Sarah Wilson made two appearances in the circle on Friday afternoon, striking out a total of 21 batters to lead the Marshalltown Community College to two wins over visiting Southeast Community College. Wilson tossed a one-hit complete game shutout in the opener for a 6-0 victory and pitched three innings of relief in game two as MCC won 10-2.

Wilson struck out a career-high 15 batters in game one while allowing just two base runners overall. After allowing a leadoff walk and a single in the first inning, the sophomore hurler pitched six straight perfect innings and tallied three innings with three strikeouts. Wilson entered game two to strike out six more batters on the afternoon.

The sophomore has now struck out 142 batters on the season, first in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and third among all NJCAA Division II pitchers. Wilson is now 10-7 overall on the year and lowered her earned run average to 2.74.

Taking on the Storm for the sixth time this year, the Tigers (20-14) scored in the first inning as Brooke Dunkin (Bussey, IA/Twin Cedars) reached on an infield single and came around to score on a Mackenzie Gott (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa) base hit up the middle. Dunkin's run proved to be all the scoring the Tigers would need as Wilson dominated the rest of the way.

Wilson helped her own cause in the third with a two out single and came around to score on a McKenna Hotopp double. The offense kicked into another gear in the sixth, scoring four runs to put the game out of reach. Dunkin delivered an RBI single and later scored in the frame, joining Hotopp, Shaiann Treu (Waianae, HI/Nankuli), and Emmeline Huffaker (Baxter, IA/Baxter) in the scoring column.

Hotopp finished game one a perfect 3-3 at the plate with a double, one run, and one RBI.

Game two saw the Tigers open up with a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the 17th time this year MCC has scored in the opening frame. Dunkin and Lexie Biehl (Maquoketa, IA/Maquoketa) crossed the plate on an errant throw for the early edge.

Tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the second, the Tigers tacked on a run in both the second and third innings before scoring four runs in the fourth to secure the win. Wilson provided a run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring in Biehl to put MCC up 10-2 and end the game on the eight-run rule.

Wilson allowed just one hit and one walk in the nightcap, but neither batter advanced further than first base. The sophomore struck out the first two batters she faced en route to a six strikeout performance.

Dunkin finsihed the afternoon with three hits to go along with four runs and four RBI for the Tigers.

MCC makes the trek to Iowa Lakes Community College for an ICCAC doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
