Hilmer homers, but Tigers fall twice at Irish Sports Dome

Rosemount, MN—The Marshalltown Community College softball team strung together timely hits, but came up short in both games at the Winter Indoor Classic in the Irish Sports Dome on Thursday. The Tigers fell 24-7 to Williston State College and 8-3 to St. Thomas JV.

Against Williston State, the Tigers struck first with a run in the first inning, but the Tetons filled the scoreboard with multiple runs in each inning. Kortlan Ollinger (Robins, IA/Linn Mar) went 2-3 with a run and an RBI in the loss while Raini Hilmer (Dysart, IA/Union) connected on her first-career home run, a two-run shot in the fifth inning.

In game two, the Tigers kept things close as St. Thomas JV held a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth inning thanks to a strong pitching performance from Chezarae Garcia (Ogden, UT/Ogden) who struck out five batters through three innings. The Tigers trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth but were able to score two runs in the inning on an RBI-double from Sarah Ghee (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) and a single from Amanda Staudt (Charles City, IA/Charles City).

The two teams traded runs in the fifth as Lauren Wolfe (Miles City, MT/Custer County) singled and came around to score on an RBI from Kari Smith (Marshalltown, IA/Marsahlltown). St. Thomas JV prevailed in the end, scoring four runs in the sixth to drop the Tigers.

MCC will take on Ellsworth Community College in the Irish Sports Dome at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning before finishing off the trip against Iowa Central Community College at 10:00 AM.
