Offense comes alive in game two, but Tigers fall twice

Marshalltown, IA—A late push in game two from the Marshalltown Community College softball team was not enough as the Tigers fell to visiting Southeastern Community College in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) action. The Tigers fell 11-0 in game one before falling 14-10 in the nightcap.

After falling flat in game one where the Tigers recorded just one hit, MCC struck with an early lead in the first inning of game two against the Blackhawks. Southeastern plated one run in the top of the first, but Kortlan Ollinger (Robins, IA/Linn Mar) drove in Lauren Wolfe (Miles City, MT/Custer County) and Amanda Staudt (Charles City, IA/Charles City) traded places with Ollinger with an RBI-double for the 2-1 edge.

The Blackhawks answered immediately with four runs in the top of the second only to see the Tigers score three of their own in the bottom half. Sarah Ghee (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) doubled to score Kaycee Ray (Clinton, UT/Clearfield) for the first run while Ollinger and Staudt each recorded their second RBI of the game in the inning, tying the game at five.

Southeastern upped their effort with five more runs in the third and held MCC to a scoreless frame. An RBI-double from Kari Smith (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) in the fourth kept the Tigers within striking distance.

Trailing 11-6 in the fifth inning, Ghee doubled again to score Chezarae Garcia (Ogden, UT/Ogden) and Ray. Ollinger pulled MCC within two with an RBI-single to cap the scoring in the inning. Southeastern scored three more runs over the final two innings and limited the Tigers to just one seventh-inning run from Garcia to cut the rally short as MCC dropped its second game of the day.

Ghee and Ollinger both went 2-5 at the plate with three RBI while Ray collected a career-high three hits in the loss. Garcia went 2-4 with two runs scored. Wolfe took the loss for the Tigers.

In the opener, the MCC offense failed to get going as Southeastern built a 5-0 lead through the first inning and never looked back.

Smith recorded the lone hit for MCC while Garcia was tagged with the loss.

MCC resumes conference action tomorrow afternoon with a home doubleheader against Muscatine Community College at 1:00 PM.
