Unearned runs lead to a pair of losses to Indian Hills

Ottumwa, IA—Freshman Kayla Lopez (Tracy, CA/Merrill F. West) recorded two hits in game two, including a two-run single, but the Marshalltown Community College softball team dropped a pair of games to Indian Hills Community College, 14-1 and 11-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Starting pitcher Lauren Wolfe (Miles City, MT/Custer County) tossed a scoreless first inning for the Tigers, but the MCC offense struck out five times through the first two frames to keep the game scoreless.

The Warriors (25-9, 11-0) struck first with seven runs in the second inning, including a three-run home run to take the early lead. The Warriors put the game away with seven more runs in the fourth inning. MCC's lone run came in the top of the fifth as Chezarae Garcia (Ogden, UT/Ogden) scored on a double-steal attempt. The Tigers recorded four hits in the opening game loss.

MCC fell behind in the opening inning of game two as the Warriors scored nine unearned runs in the first off of starting pitcher Cass Vasquez (Los Angeles, CA/Oscar De La Hoya). The Tigers got two runs back in the top of the second as Lopez singled to right to score Amanda Staudt (Charles City, IA/Charles City) and Kari Smith (Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown). MCC managed just two hits the remainder of the game to drop the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) doubleheader.

Of the 25 runs scored for the Warriors on Saturday, only two were earned. All 11 runs in game two were unearned for Vasquez.

The Tigers head to Muscatine Community College for a conference doubleheader at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
