Tigers drop tournament opener, game two postponed to Saturday

Updated NJCAA Region XI Division I Softball Tournament Bracket

UPDATE: Saturday's Region XI Softball Tournament action has been pushed back to Sunday due to weather. The Tigers will take on No. 3 seed Muscatine Community College at 1:00 PM.

Original Story:

Muscatine, IA—The Marshalltown Community College softball team dropped its opening game of the 2015 NJCAA Region XI Division I Tournament on Friday, falling 8-0 to No. 4 seed Southeastern Community College in five innings. The Tigers second game of the double-elimination tournament was postponed after three rain delays and two lightning delays at the Kent Stein Complex.

Following the opening game loss to the Blackhawks, the No. 5 seed Tigers were set to play No. 3 Muscatine Community College in an elimination game at 4:00 PM after the Cardinals fell to No. 2 seed Iowa Western Community College. A storm cell swept through Muscatine, delaying the Tigers until 8:00 PM. A pair of lightning delays halted the tournament for the night, forcing the schedule change.

Weather looks unfavorable for Saturday afternoon, forcing tournament officials to implement an alternative plan. If weather forces the cancellation of Saturday's action, the Tigers will play Muscatine at 11:00 AM on Sunday morning.

MCC's day began at 10:00 AM against the Blackhawks where the Tigers fell in a 2-0 deficit in the first inning. MCC was unable to dig itself out of the hole despite starting pitcher Cass Vasquez (Los Angeles, CA/Oscar De La Hoya) holding the Blackhawks to a scoreless second inning. Southeastern put three runs on the board in the third and added three more in the fourth while the MCC offense was held scoreless.

Kortlan Ollinger (Robins, IA/Linn Mar) went 2-3 in the game with a stolen base to improve her batting average to a team-best .371 on the year. Sarah Ghee (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) added a double in the fourth inning.
