The Marshalltown Community College softball team has signed Anika Matsumoto to a National Letter of Intent for the 2018 season. Matsumoto is a native of Beaverton, Oregon.

A primary middle infielder, Matsumoto attends Beaverton High School. Matsumoto also plays for the Washington Illusion 18 Gold Team for head coach Brent Harris.

"Anika is a player we expect to solidify our infield in a hurry," MCC head coach Garland Shirley stated. "She has great presence on the field and is an excellent offensive threat. Anika comes from a strong and established club program. The coaches and players from their program come with the right attitude and approach in everything they do. She is also very serious in the classroom."

Matsumoto made her official visit to MCC on Friday afternoon and was pleased with her experience. "I think Marshalltown is a very beautiful place and seems very humble. I really liked the facilities the school offers."

Matsumoto, who had the opportunity to interact with coach Shirley at a Las Vegas, NV recruiting camp, pointed to a number of factors regarding the coaching staff as her decision to sign with the Tigers. "Coach Shirley is a very personable person and pays very close attention to detail with a business-like approach to the game. To be able to play in a strong conference like this is very exciting. I'm really happy to be able to start my college career out here. I'm ready for something big and new."
