Game one rout earns Tigers a split at Southeastern

Burlington, IA—A potent offensive attack in game one lifted the Marshalltown Community College softball team to a 13-2 win over Southeastern Community College in the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader. The Tigers dropped game two 3-0 to the Blackhawks.

Seven different players combined for 14 hits in game one as the Tigers (19-15/1-7) picked up their first Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) win of the year. Southeastern (23-17/3-7) was once again limited offensively in game two, but the Tigers were held scoreless to split the afternoon slate.

MCC used a three-run home run in the first inning from Tess Cheetham (Oceanside, CA/Oceanside) to boost the offense in game one. After extending the lead to 5-2 in the third inning, MCC received another three-run home run, this one from the bat of Courtney Fudge (Pleasant Hill, IA/Des Moines East).

Annalee Myers (Ames, IA/Ames) delivered a two-run double in the sixth and Lexie Valentine (Des Moines, IA/Saydel) capped the scoring with an RBI-double in the sixth. Sophomore Paige Taylor (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Terry Fox) worked all six innings in the circle to earn her 11th win of the year.

Freshman Dion Shirley (Van Meter, IA/Van Meter) went 4-4 with four runs scored in the win. Shaena Robinson (Gardnerville, NV/Douglas) added three hits and scored twice. Fudge and Valentine each tallied two hits.

MCC had a prime scoring opportunity in the first inning of game two, loading the bases but to no avail. The Tigers had just three baserunners over the next five innings. Samuari Jones (Louisville, KY/Seneca) and Jordan Carter (Sigourney, IA/Sigourney) reached scoring position in the seventh inning but were left stranded to end the game.

Jones was the lone Tiger to record two hits in the nightcap. Carter allowed just two earned runs in four innings while Taylor tossed two scoreless frames of relief.

MCC returns to Indian Hills Community College for an ICCAC doubleheader at 2:00 PM on Saturday afternoon and will host Iowa Western Community College on Sophomore Day at 2:00 PM Sunday.
