Tigers Finish 6-5 at THE Spring Games

The MCC softball team traveled to Clermont, Florida to play eleven games in THE Spring Games softball tournament over spring break. The Tigers finished 6-5 on the week while experimenting with different lineups in their first games on the season. The team started the week splitting games on Sunday, March 11 as they fell to Madison College 5-2 before defeating Cuyahoga Community College 4-3 for the Tigers first win of the season. They would replicate the win the next morning, defeating Illinois Valley Community College 9-5 behind Chasity Jordan who went 3-2 from the plate with 2 RBIs. Later that afternoon the Tigers fell to Heartland Community College 11-3.

The team was able to schedule a day off while in Clermont, spending the day at the beach before a three game slate on Wednesday. The Tigers went 1-2 on Wednesday, defeating Anderson University 15-12. Returning All-American Shaena Robinson went 2-3 from the plate while batting in three runs. Kylie Swan went 2-2 from the plate and also batted in 3 runs in the high scoring affair. Freshman Chasity Jordan was perfect at the plate Wednesday afternoon, going 4-4 while plating one run.

Thursday saw the Tigers hand the Blue Knights of Dakota County Technical College a hard fought 7-5 defeat. The Tigers trailed the entire game before exploding in the 6th inning bring in six runs for the two-run victory. Shaena Robinson smashed a homerun over the left field fence, bringing in three runs to put the Tigers over the top. Later that day the bats quieted down for the Tigers, falling 5-0 to Jackson College.

The final day saw the Tigers dominate St. Clair County Community College 16-1. The Tigers had their way at the plate all game long, recording 14 hits with 31 totals at bats. Shaena Robinson again showed why she is considered one of the best players in the country after going 3-3 at the plate and bringing in five runs. The sophomore standout added two homeruns to her total against St. Clair County, and hit another two later that day against Bethel University. The Tigers finished their trip with a 5-1 victory with help from Robinson, as she batted in all five scores for the Tigers.

Freshman Katelyn Cantu left Clermont with a 2.13 ERA in her three starts and six appearances, recording 12 strikeouts and giving up 28 hits. Sophomore Taylor Tague has started 10 of the Tigers 13 games this season, throwing 17 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched. Freshman Chasity Jordan played well over break as well, going 15-37 at the plate with five doubles and five RBIs. Shaena Robinson made a lot of noise at the plate last week, going 17-37 with six doubles and eight homeruns.

The Tigers will be back in action Thursday, March 22 when they host the Trojans of North Iowa Area Community College at 1:00 and 3:00 for the first home games of the season. The Trojans are currently 8-10 this season and score often, scoring 183 times this season and recording 17 homeruns.
