Softball Splits With NIACC

The Marshalltown Community College softball team played their home opener Thursday night, taking on the Trojans from North Iowa Area Community College. The Tigers entered the game 6-7, after dropping their first two games of the season to Iowa Western Community College, then going 6-5 in Clermont, Florida at THE Spring Games.  The Tigers split games with the Trojans, winning 13-5 in game one and falling 16-4 in game two.

The Tigers dominated game one at the plate, recording 17 hits with 29 at bats for a .586 team average. Getting out to a fast start, the Tigers recorded two runs in the first inning. The Trojans responded in the second inning with a quick four runs. Each team added a run in the third and that would be the last time the Trojans got the best of freshman pitcher Katelyn Cantu, as the Trojans would go scoreless the final three innings. The Tigers however, would add four more runs in the fourth inning and another one in the fifth to put the game away. Anika Matsumoto was impressive at the plate, going 3-3 with three RBIs. Kylie Swan and Kaylee Hanks each finished 3-4 with an RBI. AnnaMarie Armstrong finished with two RBIs and standout freshman Chasity Jordan finished 2-4 with two RBIs and a home run over the right field fence.

The Trojans flipped the script in the second game, scoring early and often. After giving up and early run in the top of the first inning, returning All-American Shaena Robinson blasted a home run over the center field fence to tie up the game. Robinson ended the game 3-4 at the plate with the lone RBI. While the Tigers cooled off, the Trojans poured it on.  Scoring four runs in the third inning behind Courtney Johannes's grand slam, and added four in the fifth inning and five in the sixth inning to end the game.

The softball team will not have to wait long to get back on the field, as they take on the Panthers of Ellsworth Community College Friday. The Panthers started the season hot, but have since lost eight games in row. The Panthers have some heavy hitters in the lineup, recording 17 home runs compared to the Tigers 10. The Iowa Valley doubleheader is set to begin at 12:00 PM with the second game following at 2:00 PM
