Defense shuts down Grand View JV as Tigers roll 77-50

Marshalltown, IA—30 turnovers that led to 32 points for the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team gave the Tigers a 77-50 victory over visiting Grand View College JV on Thursday night as MCC improved to 2-0 on the year. Jasmine Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) and Jamerka Martin (Milwaukee, WI/Rufus King) both poured in game-highs with 16 points apiece.

Howe, this week's Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Offensive Player of the Week, provided her second straight double-digit performance to open her career as the freshman scored 12 points in the first half. Howe shot 50 percent from the floor and collected three steals to go along with three rebounds. Martin contributed from the outside as the freshman connected on four of six three point attempts on the night. Howe and Martin teamed up for six of the team's seven three-point shots.

Mackenzie Gott (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa), named the ICCAC's Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday registered her second straight double-double as the sophomore finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Gott did most of her damage in the first half to give the Tigers a comfortable lead as the forward recorded 10 points and eight rebounds before halftime. Courtney Williams-Perry (Milwaukee, WI/Bradley Tech) contributed on the offensive glass for the Tigers, grabbing five rebounds to go along with six boards on the defensive end. Williams-Perry also finished with eight points down low.

The Vikings opened the game with a 2-1 lead but a three-point shot from Howe gave the Tigers the final lead change of the game. Grand View was able to tie the game at 10, but Martin came off the bench to spark a 9-0 run with a three-point shot. Gott hit a jumper with under a minute to play to give MCC its largest lead of the day at 17 as the Tigers went into the locker room with a 39-22 advantage.  

Both sides went scoreless for the first 3:47 to open the second half until Williams-Perry hit a layup to open the scoring. Martin hit another three at the 7:44 mark to give the Tigers a 64-34 advantage, putting the game out of reach. The Vikings were limited to just seven points in the final 4:30.

The Tiger defense led the way for most of the night as MCC collected 16 steals and outrebounded its counterpart 49-90. The Tigers forced the Vikings to miss all 11 of their three-point attempts on the night.

MCC continues its home stand with a matchup against ABCD Academy at 7:00 PM on Nov. 11 in the Student Activity Center.
