Second half run carries MCC to 59-47 victory

Marshalltown, IA—Jamerka Martin (Milwaukee, WI/Rufus King) scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team to a come-from-behind 59-47 victory over Southeastern Community College Wednesday night at the Student Activity Center. MCC improves to 4-3 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play and 13-5 overall.

Martin scored 15 points in the first half but the Tigers fell behind by double-digits late in the opening period. With Southeastern leading 29-18, Martin sparked a 10-0 run to end the half with a pair of three-point shots as MCC cut the deficit to one at the break.

Danielle Montgomery (Beaman, IA/BCLUW) and Martin connected on back-to-back buckets to open the second half and tie the game at 32. The Blackhawks built their lead back to four until Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) came off the bench to score five straight points and put the Tigers back on top for good. Howe's spurt was part of a 16-5 run to help the Tigers hold off Southeastern for the conference victory.

With the win, the Tigers jump ahead of Des Moines Area Community College in the ICCAC standings. Both teams are currently 4-3, but the Tigers hold the tiebreaker thanks to a 68-67 victory over the Bears on Jan. 11

Howe finished the game with 11 points in the second half while Montgomery recorded her first career double-double, registering a career-high 13 points and matching a personal-best with 11 rebounds. Courtney Williams-Perry picked up her eighth double-digit rebounding effort of the season with a game-high 12 boards.

As a team, the Tigers controlled the glass with a 42-27 rebounding advantage, including a 15-7 edge on the offensive end. Williams-Perry and Montgomery each grabbed seven offensive rebounds on the night.

The Tigers escaped a poor-shooting performance in the first half where MCC hit just 33.3 percent of its shots by rebounding in the second half with a 44.4 percent mark.

MCC will hit the road for a conference matchup at Southwestern Community College (3-14/1-5) at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
