Tigers fall at home to Iowa Western 68-41

Marshalltown, IA—Despite five three-point shots from Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent), the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team fell 68-41 to Iowa Western Community College on Wednesday night at the Student Activity Center. The Tigers drop to 14-6 overall on the year.

Taking on the NJCAA Division I Reivers (20-2), the Tigers dropped their first game since receiving votes in the NJCAA Division II poll. Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) scored the first five points of the game for MCC. Jamerka Martin (Milwaukee, WI/Rufus King) knocked down a jumper to pull the Tigers within one 8-7, but the Reivers pulled away with a 22-4 run. Howe scored the final five points of the first half for MCC but Iowa Western had built a 36-19 lead at the break.

Howe scored 14 of the team's first 16 points to open the second half, including four three-point shots. The freshman shot 5-8 from beyond the arc and 7-12 from the floor overall. Salgado finished the game with 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Courtney Williams-Perry grabbed 11 rebounds for her 10th double-digit rebounding effort of the year.

Both team's held an even margin in the rebounding column at 30, but the Tigers committed 18 turnovers while forcing just seven. The Reivers strong first half came on 53.8 percent (14-26 shooting).

Both MCC and Iowa Western received votes in their respective poll on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers return to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play at Ellsworth on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
