Women's basketball receives votes in NJCAA Division II poll

NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball Poll

After winning four of its last five games, the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team has appeared in the NJCAA Division II rankings in the Receiving Votes category for the second time this year. The Tigers are 14-5 overall on the year and sit in fourth place in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

The Tigers appeared in the Dec. 11 poll after jumping out to a 10-1 record, but three straight losses knocked MCC out of the rankings. The Tigers bounced back with a 68-67 victory over Des Moines Area CC and a 10-point win over Iowa Lakes.

Following a loss to Northeast Community College, a team that received votes in the Division I poll at the time, the Tigers scored two conference victories against Southeastern and on the road against Southwestern, winning the two games by an average of 21 points per game to improve to 5-3 in league play.

MCC has managed to jump back into the national mix despite losing two of its top scorers to injuries in Mackenzie Gott (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa) and Kaleigh Sieck (Toledo, IA/South Tama). Over the five-game stretch, the Tigers have been led by Jamerka Martin (Milwaukee, WI/Rufus King) who is averaging 16.2 points per game while shooting 42.5 percent from three-point range.

Courtney Williams-Perry (Milwaukee, WI/Bradley Tech) is averaging 12.2 rebounds and has twice been named ICCAC Player of the Week. Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) has played a pivotal role on both ends of the court, averaging nine points, five assists, four steals, and four rebounds during the run.

Along with MCC, the ICCAC placed three other teams in the top 20. North Iowa Area Community College, Kirkwood Community College, and Iowa Central Community College remained No. 2, No. 3, and No. 10, respectively.

The Tigers will host Iowa Western Community College at 5:00 PM on Wednesday night as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The Tritons received votes in the NJCAA Division I poll this week.
