Four players hit double-figures as MCC drops Ellsworth 67-53

Iowa Falls, IA—Courtney Williams-Perry recorded her second double-double of the year and was one of four players to reach double-figures as the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team defeated Ellsworth Community College 67-53 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers improve to 6-3 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play.

Williams-Perry scored 11 points to go along with 14 rebounds on the day, her fifth straight double-digit rebounding performance and 11th of the year. Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) scored a game-high 19 points on 7-11 shooting, including 4-8 from three-point range. Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) and Jamerka Martin (Milwaukee, WI/Rufus King) each scored 13 points for the Tigers.

MCC opened up with a strong shooting performance in the first half as the Tigers knocked down 50 percent of their shots in the opening period. MCC built an early 18-5 lead, highlighted by a three-point play from Howe at the 13:21 mark. Howe scored 12 of the team's first 18 points, including three three-point shots during the run.

The Panthers cut their deficit to eight with just over two minutes to play but MCC was able to build the lead back to double-digits and went into halftime leading 35-22.

Howe hit back-to-back shots, including a three-pointer, to start the second half. Danielle Montgomery (Beaman, IA/BCLUW) hit two straight baskets to put MCC up by 20, 44-24. ECC hit three three-point shots midway through the half to pull within 10, but the Tigers hit 10 of 11 free throws down the stretch to hold off the Panthers and claim the conference win.

As a team, MCC hit 18-24 from the charity stripe, including 7-8 from Salgado and 6-8 from Martin. The Tigers limited ECC to just 26.1 percent (6-23) from three-point range on the day and forced 11 turnovers. MCC controlled the glass with a 46-28 rebounding advantage.

The Tigers, who received votes in this week's NJCAA Division II poll, remain in fourth place in the ICCAC, two games ahead of fifth-place Des Moines Area Community College.

MCC will host No. 10 Iowa Central Community College in an ICCAC battle at 6:00 PM on Wednesday night.
