Sproul's career-night lifts MCC over Grand View JV

Marshalltown, IA—Sammie Sproul (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo West) drained three three-point shots in the second half to propel the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team to a 67-51 win over the visiting Grand View JV on Monday night at the Student Activity Center. Sproul finished the night with a career-high 22 points.

After Grand View rebounded from an eight-point halftime deficit to tie the game at 42, Sproul drilled back-to-back three-point shots to spark a 16-3 run that helped the Tigers snap a two-game losing streak. Sproul finished the night 4-7 from long-range and 7-13 from the floor while adding five assists and four rebounds.

JeAnn Hiraldo (Ames, IA/Ames) scored 10 first-half points and finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds. Courtney Williams-Perry (Milwaukee, WI/Bradley Tech) recorded her 11th double-digit rebounding effort of the year with a game-high 14 boards. Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) and Jamerka Martin (Milwaukee, WI/Rufus King) added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

It was all Grand View early on as the Vikings jumped out to a 16-9 lead after hitting four three-point shots. Sproul scored four straight points to cap an 11-2 run to help give the Tigers their first lead of the night at 20-18. MCC limited its counterpart to just one point over a span of 6:47 that allowed the Tigers to expand their lead and take a 38-30 edge into halftime.

The Vikings opened the second frame on a 12-4 run to even the game at 42, but Sproul's timely touch from deep ignited the MCC offense to carry the Tigers to their 10th win of the year.

MCC forced 24 total turnovers on the night, including 15 in the first half. Due in large part to Williams-Perry's 14 rebounds, the Tigers outrebounded the Vikings 47-37 on the night.

The Tigers host MCC-Penn Valley at 5:00 PM on Wednesday night as part of a doubleheader with the men's team, who will host Indian Hills Community College at 7:00 PM in the Student Activity Center.
