Tables turned as No. 17 Iowa Western drops MCC

Council Bluffs, IA—Three weeks after defeating Iowa Western Community College by 18 points, the Marshalltown Community College women's basketball team found themselves on the other end of the spectrum, falling 64-45 on the road to the No. 17 Reivers. Sammie Sproul (Waterloo, IA/Waterloo West) scored a game-high 18 points in the loss.

The Tigers (14-11, 1-2) upset then No. 4 Iowa Western 59-41 on Jan. 17 at the Student Activity Center and opened up play Saturday night with the same mentality. MCC jumped all over the Reivers, taking a 9-2 lead early on after a three-point shot from Jasmin Howe (Millicent, Australia/Millicent). The Tiger defense held the Reivers without a field goal for the first 3:40 of action, but Iowa Western strung together eight straight points to take a 10-9 lead.

The Tigers used a pair of three-point shots from Birana McGinty (Milwaukee, WI/Bradley Tech) and Howe to keep pace with the Reivers. MCC tied the game on three separate occasions, including 23-23, but could not regain the lead as Iowa Western went into intermission leading 27-24.

It was all Reivers early on to open the second half, scoring nine straight points for a 36-24 lead. Sproul drained a three-point shot to slow the Reivers' pace, and MCC was able to pull within five.

Iowa Western turned right around and built a double-digit lead, and eventually led by as many as 19 on multiple occasions. The Reivers held on for the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victory).

Sproul finished the night shooting 6-14 from the floor, including 3-5 from the three-point line. The freshman also grabbed five rebounds, three steals, and dished out three assists. JeAnn Hiraldo (Ames, IA/Ames) added 12 points and seven rebounds. Howe finished the night with 10 points despite nine coming in the first half.

Missing conference-leading rebounder Courtney Williams-Perry (Milwaukee, WI/Bradley Tech) due to an injury, the Tigers were outrebounded 48-31 on the night.

The Tigers travel to William Penn JV for a nonconference matchup at 7:00 PM on Monday night.
