Strong start fizzles out in loss to Iowa Lakes

Marshalltown, IA—A blistering start from the Marshalltown Community College Women's Basketball team eventually went cold as the Tigers dropped a 66-55 decision to Iowa Lakes Community College at the Student Activity Center on Wednesday night. Shyannon Wolf (Tama, IA/Meskwaki) led the Tigers with a career-high 15 points.

Averaging just 48.7 points entering the night, the Tigers (4-12) erupted for 27 first quarter points behind the strong shooting of Wolf. The freshman made three consecutive three-point shots on three straight trips down the court to give MCC an 11-3 lead over the Lakers (10-5). MCC held a 27-15 lead after the first quarter, the most points the team has scored in one stanza this season.

The second quarter was not as friendly to the Tigers as Iowa Lakes held MCC to just three points, but the Tigers still maintained a 30-29 at halftime. It looked as if the Tigers found their touch in the third quarter, connecting on four three-pointers in the first four minutes of the quarter to take a 42-36 lead. Samuari Jones (Louisville, KY/Seneca) hit a jumper in the closing seconds to give the Tigers a 48-45 lead heading to the final frame.

The Lakers took their first lead since a 3-2 edge in the first quarter with a free throw at the 4:37 mark to put the visitors ahead 53-52. Iowa Lakes outscored MCC 13-3 the rest of the way to escape with the victory.

JeAnn Hiraldo (Ames, IA/Ames) and Cassie Cullen (Ankeny, IA/Lynnville-Sully) each added 11 points and grabbed nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

MCC connected on a season-high nine three-pointers in the loss.

Wednesday's contest was the final game of the first semester for the Tigers. MCC opens up the second-half slate with a home game against Des Moines Area Community College at 6:00 PM on Jan. 5.
